[PRODUCTION] Week 16 - Break from the Animation

After getting the animation fully timed, I've taken the week out of actually animating the video in order to catch up on my job. This has been a good time to reflect on my animation, as I have had a lot of time to not pay too much attention to it, then going back to it today has really opened my eyes to the flaws it has. These flaws have mostly been addressed in the changes list, however it is more evident now that I have taken time away from it.

This week, I want to be able to get the final scene animated fully, get rid of any continuity errors, and hopefully get all the drawings on the back walls. I don't anticipate getting everything done this week, as a lot of the flaws involve adding shading to the characters, as the only scenes that are fully shaded are scenes 1 and 2. Overall, I will spend as much time as possible trying to get as much done for the animation as I can, I have now finished the work I was behind on with my job so I don't have that tying me back.

[PRODUCTION] Week 15 - A fully timed Animation

After 15 weeks I have my animation fully timed, aside from the end credits and the post credits scene that is. I wanted to get to this stage, because as I have mentioned in a previous post I can now focus on any changes that need to be made. This week I had all of scene 6 to get through, and although there isn't a completed shot in this scene so far, everything is where I want it to be.

Now that everything is timed, I can come back to each shot without the worry that everything wont be done in time, as I still have another 15 weeks left until I hit the end of my schedule, plus an extra few weeks on top of that. I may seem confident, but I am aware of all the shots and changes I still need to do, especially in the post production. One factor I need to start considering is the audio, unfortunately the sound designer I originally wanted can't do the audio for me anymore, so I need to either find somebody else, or do it myself.

This week I hope to get most of the changes done, maybe even start on the traditional animated shots, however I still need to focus on my career as I have put that on the back-burner this week. Once I am up to date with my career, I can jump right back into the production and hopefully get something fantastic at the end of the month!

On a side note - I am using this video as an experiment as well. I have used YouTube's suggested "Lighting Enhancers" to see if it makes a difference to the finished animation. As lighting is a big part of my animation, I wanted to see if these enhancers could add anything to the animation.

[PRODUCTION] Week 14 - Slowly getting through Scene 5

One of the main things I focused on this week was experimentation with clay, so I only got half way through scene 5 this week. I originally wanted to at least get the animation timed out this week, however I feel that I should be able to get everything timed out this week as most of scene 6 is traditional animation. The main thing I'll need to do is to work with the camera, and perhaps some minimal animation with May the Cat.

I have hit a somewhat wall with this scene now however, once the Young Animator sits down and puts the film on, I wanted to have him watch the film and then fall asleep. However I don't think I can get away with having the Young Animator stare at the camera for 5 seconds or so. I may have to rethink what I have the young animator doing at that moment in time. However, for the time being I need to focus on what I want the rest of the shots to look like, I might incorporate him reading a book of some kind, and have that drift him to sleep.

[PRODUCTION] Week 13 - Plowing through Scene 4

This week I have been very busy with the production, I ended up finishing most of scene 4 and working on 24 individual Shots. I finished 4 new shorts complete with shading, 4 need shading which I will hopefully get done in due time, and 16 have just started and need completing. I believe that this is the most work I have done in a week and has bumped me back ahead of the production schedule.

Working on these shots have made me realize that I am in need of traditional animation soon, I currently have only 1 shot of traditional animation, and soon i'll have to focus all of my energy onto it. Next week I will have a 2 weeks off work, and I will be able to focus much more onto the animation side, as my research assignment will be handed in on the 9th of April.

[PRODUCTION] Week 12 - Adding the drawings to the wall

Now we are in week 12 of the animation process, and I was finally able to get all the shading complete and got most of the pictures uploaded for the drawings on the wall. This means from week 13 on wards I can focus on scenes 3 on wards too. Hopefully I can get most of the animation complete in these scenes by the 09/04/2017 as this is when I start my fortnight off work and I can focus on traditional animation.

During this week, I made a few changes all around, I made the opening to the short slightly longer to add the text super imposed onto the screen, as well as fixed the error in the title. I also extended the time lapse by adding a few more frames of animation at the end, so it makes it seem like more time has passed, as well as added animation paper to his desk, to show the progression of time.

I may still need to come back to these scenes, as I still need to add traditional drawings to these scenes, however as long as I can get the majority of scene 3 finished by the 9th of April I will be happy with the progress I have made thus far.

[PRODUCTION] Week 11 - Halt on production to focus on Research

As I anticipated, this week I only had enough time to do a couple of things in my animation, nothing new to really update with. I spent most of the time focusing on the research side of the course, this includes writing up the responses I received from the animation contacts, however I will delve a little more into this soon in a separate blog post.

As stated, I have only really done a little bit of animation this week, including more of the shading in scene 1, because of this I only need to do a little bit of traditional animation and then scene 1 will be fully complete. I am hoping that by next week I can at least get scene 2 fully shaded and perhaps get the drawings on the walls.

[PRODUCTION] Week 10 - Finalizing the first two scenes

The main purpose for me this week was to get as much of the first two scenes done as possible, once they have been fully finished I can focus on scene 3 to finish allowing me to focus on the traditional drawings. I unfortunately did not finish some of the shading on some of the shots, however the first two scenes are now fully coloured. Once I have finished the shading I can focus on getting the "everybody can draw" drawings completed and scanned, to make the walls filled with drawings.

I am hoping that I can at least finish all the shading by week 12. I would have liked it completed by week 11 but I feel I need to focus more energy on getting my research completed, once I get the essay underway I can come back and get scene 1 and 2 completed. I am happy however that I got most of the shot done in scene 2, as I was beginning to worry that perhaps I would forget to add the Old Animator moving around the room, or it'd be too long and I would end up drawing him differently.

I am anticipating to not get much animation done next week, however I feel that I should be focusing my energy on something that is getting left behind. I believe that it will be worth it in the long run, and once this essay is complete I wont need to worry about any more writing assignments.

[PRODUCTION] Week 9 - Finishing Scene 3 and going back to Scene 1

I was able to finish scene 3 this week and now I can focus more on the finalization on every unfinished shot thus far. I have currently finished off shot 6 and 8 from scene 1, I still need to try to get shots 2, 10 and 11 finished, shot 11 shouldn't be too hard to complete however, I feel that 2 and 10 will eat up a good amount of time as the majority of these shots are just a floating head. I still need to animate the body rotating and moving, this will take me a few hours to complete.

I am hoping that throughout next week I am able to get a few more shots finished, perhaps complete all of scene 1.

[PRODUCTION] Week 8 - Nearly finishing scene 3

I am nearing the end of scene 3, this is important as once I have finished scene 3 I will be going back through scene 1 to 3 and try to get the shots complete. Scene 4 onward uses heavy traditional animation in contrast to the earlier scenes. because of this I will be wanting more time for these shots, so until I get a chance to set up the light-box for a substantial amount of time I will be revisiting some of the earlier shots and colour them and finalize them.

I am hoping that once I have finished scene 3 I can get all of the earlier shot complete by the time Summer arrives, giving me much more time to animate using the light-box.

[PRODUCTION] Week 7 - Getting back into Frame-by-Frame

*NOTE*
THE VIDEO ABOVE IS ACTUALLY WEEK 6, IT ONLY CAME TO MY ATTENTION DURING WEEK 8 THAT I MADE THIS MISTAKE, BECAUSE OF THIS I HAVE LOST THE ORIGINAL WEEK 7 FOOTAGE. HOWEVER, YOU CAN READ WHAT I ACTUALLY ACHIEVED DURING THIS WEEK BELOW, THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.

This week, the one thing I wanted to do was to complete a shot which has a good amount of frame-by-frame animation, as the last few weeks has been severely lacking. This week I wanted to go abit further than the original animatic and storyboard with shot 9, I wanted to go into a lot of detail of the young animator setting up his Cintiq, or as it is known in the animation; the 'Sketchtiq'. I am actually really happy with the outcome, this shot is very important as it is a very distinct difference from the last shots, as it is the introduction to technology. Originally, the shot was to have the young animator place the Cintiq on the desk and then sit down and begin drawing the character, however now he plugs in the Cintiq and the Cintiq actually turns on. This to me makes the animation flow to the next shot very nicely.

I feel however I am getting very behind on my traditional shots, once we enter scene 4 the majority of the shots from then on wards are heavily traditional, I am toying with the idea of leaving all of the traditional shots until the Summer, as I will have a lot more free time to actually focus on them, as I am animating these digital shots with every moment I get spare while juggling the research side as well as preparing lectures and marking my students work. I feel that once Summer arrives, there wil be a drastic increase in the workload which is produced, and I feel that is when the quality of the overall animation will be very evident.

[PRODUCTION] Week 6 - Losing Quality Over Time?

Since last week, I have not done much in the way of animating because I am strapped for time due to me still working at a college. Because of these time restraints I am finding it difficult to find time to actually animate anything, and during the times when I do animate, it feels very rushed. The shots I have done this week to me, feel very rushed. I am not only falling behind my schedule by one shot, but I also haven't even got full bodies in one of them -it's just a walking pair of legs! After next week it is the holidays and I get a week off, during this time I feel that I will get myself back up to speed and the animation quality will hopefully improve. Because of my hours and the work I also have to do in my spare time, I lost track of the things I need to do for my Masters, also the research assignment is slowly creeping up as is the InDesign poster work too. I will be able to get everything finished in time, but so far it is a difficult battle with me and the clock, and this week I feel that time got the better of me.

[PRODUCTION] Week 5 - VFX and Scene 3

Scene 3 is a long scene, consisting of various shots of the young animator, however i have yet to get to these shots. Currently I am working on the panning shot at the very beginning of scene 3, this consists of 3 shots of different angles of the room, before the Young Animator opens the door. These 3 shots are very important, as they must convey that the room is abandoned, dusty and old. I feel like I could make these shots much more dustier, as I have previously said after seeing my tutor, as well as making the overall room older, and full of cobwebs.

I have just started to animate the Young Animator opening the door, when the door opens the room is filled with light once again, so I need to make sure a right amount of light comes through the room, but not enough to make the room too bright. I am juggling with the idea that the Young Animator will turn the light on in the room, revealing how old and decrepit the room actually is, however I don't have to mess with the lighting details just yet.

Next week I will hopefully get the animator in the room and setting up his equipment, I have put the traditional animated scenes on hold for the time being as I want to make sure everything in the animation is timed perfectly first, however I will pick them up again shortly once the Animator leaves the room again at the beginning of Scene 4.

[PRODUCTION] Week 4 - Finishing the Rough for Scene 2

Scene 2 is a tricky scene, it only consists of 2 shots; one which consists of Max waving the Old Animator goodbye, and the second shot which flies through time as the room gets more filled with animation paper and various other nick-nacks. The thing that is so difficult is that I have to get everything in this shot perfected, or else I wont be able to carry on to Scene 3. This is because I need to figure out where each piece of animation paper is located on the wall, and which drawing will be on each sheet of animation paper, or else i'll have to do double the work by adding them to scene 3 at a later date.

I am currently in a slight struggle with myself over what I should be putting onto the animation paper, as I don't want anything to clash with Max the Cat once he runs from sheet to sheet, but I also don't want it to be bare. Back to week 4 however, I have finished the roughs for scene 2, all that is left to add to it is where the Old Animator will appear, and what drawings will actually be on the animation paper.

I am still ahead of the schedule, even with the week off which is a good sign. I feel like I can successfully get back on track and start plowing through shots of the animation.

[PRODUCTION] Week 3 - Burning out and the Revival

Between the 16/01/2017 and the 22/01/2017, I intended to do a few more scenes in the animation, this includes the majority of scene 2. However, this week I found it difficult to get in to the mind set of work. I believe this is because I never gave myself a proper break once I submitted my Practice 1, I jumped right back into production. I was concerned about the work that I submitted to be marked and I feel that this played a big part on my work ethic for this week. However, after a week of no animation and now that I have received the feedback from my work, I feel like I can jump right back into the production of the animation.

I think I needed this break, as I now feel confident to continue the production of the film. I will continue to produce the animation to the standard I want to, I will begin to create more digital backgrounds for scene 2 and try to get the traditional shots for scene 2 out of the way this week. I have not fallen behind schedule because of this break, as I was ahead anyway, this means that I do not need to do any extra work to catch up.

[PRODUCTION] Week 2 - Traditional Animation Starts

Week two has been much more of a challenge than week one, as during this week I have not only continued the animation process to get 11 shots done, which is all of scene 1, but I have also done a shot using the light-box aswell. The scenes I completed this week weren't too hard, they were fairly simple to complete, colouring in a few of the previous scenes however proved a fairly difficult task. This week I have learnt that because I am only animating the outline first and colouring in later, when it comes to colouring I have to break each part of the body apart. When I do this, I cannot edit the character nearly as easy, making it a one time deal, once the character has been broken up, the character will stay in that position. If there is an in-between that looks out after this, it'll just have to stay that way unless I draw the character all over again and reanimate the shot.

Animating Max the Cat, as stated in a previous post, also proved to be a difficult task. The finished outcome isn't the best thing I could have done, but I am particularly proud of how he jumps up at the very end of his shot, I feel that this is the smoothest piece of traditional animation in these six seconds of screen time.

Overall, I feel that I am making good progress, I have completed 11 shots out of the six I should have done, so I am just under double the amount I should have done. I will probably slow down the animation process from here on, as I don't want to burn myself out too quickly, these next shots also require alot of traditional animation, so it'll take time for me to animate these in contrast to the previous shots.

[PRODUCTION] Week 1 - Getting started

Since the 02/01/2017 I have been in production of When Dream Became Data, as stated before, I have estimated that I will need to do atleast 3 shots a week in order to make the deadline I have set for myself, the total shots I have done this week however are 7, so just over double the amount I had previously set. One of the things you may notice while watching this is that the character 'The Old Animator' is drawn very roughly, this is a conscious decision as I want to do all the colouring and in-between animation at the very end of the production, there is also a shot of Max the Cat which requires animation, however, due to location circumstances I haven't been able to use my light-box do do any scenes where he is animated. Animating Max the Cat will become a number one priority in due time, as previously stated, I feel his scenes will be the most difficult to actually animate.

I had a problem with one of the shots, that being shot 5, the second shot where we see the Animator drawing Max the Cat, this was because I had previously broke the groups of the hand after the first shot of the animator drawing Max, so I had to redraw and regroup the hand, making it slightly different the the first shot, however I don't think it is massively noticeable.

I am very happy with the progress I have made this week, I feel that if I can keep this up I will have the animation done in no time, I still need to factor in the 'Max the Cat' scenes and the 'Clay Animation' shot, because of this I need to do more than intended during each week, however I feel like this is going to be achievable.

[PRODUCTION] Max the Cat; on screen shots

While creating my Scene and Shot list, I noticed that in some scenes, I would need to draw using the Light-box, so rather than have everything in one file, I wanted to create two separate files, one which has every scene and shot, and this one which has every shot where Max appears on screen using the light-box. I still use the Scene and Shot lists order, but now because of this list I know how many different scenes I need to draw using the light-box, this will be very helpful when I begin to create shots using the light-box, as I feel that these scenes will be the most time consuming and the most difficult to animate. Below is every shot where Max the Cat is animated using a Light-box:

Scene 01: Max moves from his standard position, checks his left arm, then his right arm, then raises them both and smiles at the camera.
Shot 10

Scene 01: Max is placed upon the wall, he looks confused so he checks his surroundings, looking left and right.

[PRODUCTION] Production Schedule

Now that I have each scene and shot list written down, this should make it easier to create a production schedule, I want to make sure I get everything done in time so I have only created the schedule up until the 27/08/2017 giving me lots of extra time at the end to clean everything up and do any post production I may need to do.

To view the Schedule, click here.

Because of this time frame, this means I will need to create 3 different shots a week in order to to make the deadline I have set, however, if I am unable to do this I still have plenty of time to finish after the deadline. The production schedule doesn't however take into consideration; Max's shots, the after credits and any other forms of the production that I may need to create (Live action videos for reference, quick drawings, soundtrack etc), it is solely a production list of each scene and shot.

Using this production schedule allows me to work at my own pace without the fear of thinking I am working too slow, or alternatively, rushing the work. I can clearly see what I have done, in what time frame and what I need to do.
